Directions· Multiple Choice Questions

In the following problems, you are given four answers. Choose the right answer.

There is only ONE correct answer to each question.

If x + y = z and x = y, then which one of the following statements is false?

  1. 2x + 2y = 2z
  2. z – y = 2x
  3. x – z = y – z
  4. x = z/2
Show answer

Correct answer: B. z – y = 2x

Why

Since x = y, z = 2x. A (2x+2y=2z) and D (x=z/2) hold, and C holds because x−z = y−z when x = y. But B is false: z − y = 2x − x = x, not 2x.
