Directions· Comparison Questions

In the following problems there are two values, one in column A and the other in column B, followed by four answers. Choose the right answer.

There is only ONE correct answer to each question.

If 8ˣˣ = 4ʸʸ (i.e. 8^(4x) = 4^(6y)), compare: Column A — x; Column B — y.

  1. The value in column A is greater.
  2. The value in column B is greater.
  3. The two values are equal.
  4. The information provided is not sufficient to decide.
Show answer

Correct answer: C. The two values are equal.

Why

8 = 2³ and 4 = 2², so 2^(12x) = 2^(12y), giving 12x = 12y, so x = y.
