Directions· Comparison Questions

In the following problems there are two values, one in column A and the other in column B, followed by four answers. Choose the right answer.

There is only ONE correct answer to each question.

If m and n are positive integers, compare: Column A — 1/(m+n); Column B — 1/m + 1/n.

  1. The value in column A is greater.
  2. The value in column B is greater.
  3. The two values are equal.
  4. The information provided is not sufficient to decide.
Show answer

Correct answer: B. The value in column B is greater.

Why

1/(m+n) is always smaller than either 1/m or 1/n alone (since m+n > m and m+n > n), so it is smaller than their sum 1/m + 1/n — column B is always greater.
