Directions· Multiple Choice Questions

In the following problems, you are given four answers. Choose the right answer.

There is only ONE correct answer to each question.

[Figure: triangle abc.] The straight line gf joins the mid-points of sides ab and ac, and the straight line ed joins the mid-points of ag and af. What is the ratio of ae to ac?

  1. 2/3
  2. 1/8
  3. 1/3
  4. 1/4
Show answer

Correct answer: D. 1/4

Why

gf is a midsegment, so ag = half of ab and af = half of ac. ed then joins the midpoints of ag and af, so ae is half of af, i.e. a quarter of ac: ae/ac = 1/4.
