Directions· Multiple Choice Questions

In the following problems, you are given four answers. Choose the right answer.

There is only ONE correct answer to each question.

A square palm tree plantation is surrounded by a fence 400 meters long. The trees are arranged in a square grid pattern filling the plantation. If the distance between each adjacent pair of trees is 5 meters, and the distance between the fence and the nearest trees is also 5 meters, how many trees are there in the plantation?

  1. 324
  2. 342
  3. 361
  4. 382
Show answer

Correct answer: C. 361

Why

The fenced square has side 100 m; with 5 m from the fence to the first row of trees and 5 m between trees, there are 19 trees along each side of the grid (evenly spaced within the 90 m interior span), giving a 19×19 grid = 361 trees.
